The opening and closing components of forged steel gate valves are gate plates, which move perpendicular to the fluid flow. These valves can only be operated fully open or fully closed; they do not have throttling capabilities. Forged steel gate valves come with two sealing faces, commonly forming a wedge shape that varies in angle depending on the valve specifications. They can be manually operated, pneumatically actuated, electrically driven, or controlled via gas-liquid linkage.

 

Gate valves are categorized by material into cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and forged steel variants. Based on their sealing surfaces, they can be classified as either wedge type or parallel gate type. The wedge type further divides into single gate, double gate, and elastic gate configurations. Parallel gate valves can also be found in single or double-gate designs.

 

1) Rising stem gate valve: The stem nut is on the valve cover or bracket. By rotating the stem nut, the stem can be lifted or lowered during opening and closing operations. This design facilitates stem lubrication and provides a clear indication of the valve's open/close status, making it widely used.

 

2) Non-rising stem gate valve: The stem nut is situated within the valve body, in direct contact with the medium. To operate the gate, the stem is rotated without any vertical movement. This configuration maintains a consistent overall height for the gate valve, making it ideal for installations with limited space or large diameters. However, it should be equipped with an open/close indicator to display the valve's operational state.

 

Advantages

1. Fluid resistance is small.

2. Less external force is required for opening and closing.

3. The flow of the medium is not restricted.

4. When fully open, the sealing surface experiences less erosion from the working medium compared to stop valves.

5. The shape is relatively simple, and casting technology is good.

 

Rules of Safety Maintenance

When maintaining forged steel valves, special attention should be given to water ingress issues within the electric actuator and its transmission mechanism, particularly during rainy seasons. Water ingress can cause rust in the transmission mechanism or drive shaft sleeve and may freeze in winter. This leads to excessive operational torque for electric valves, potentially damaging transmission components. Consequently, the motor may fail to operate due to no load or trigger ultra-torque protection, preventing electrical operation. If transmission parts are damaged, manual operation becomes impossible. After an over-torque protection event, manual operation cannot be switched on; forced operation will damage internal alloy parts.
